In the Zen tradition..

One teacher (Shunru Suzuki Roshi) put it this way: ” The state of mind that exists when you sit in the right posture is itself enlightenment…These forms [sitting meditation] are not the means of obtaining the right state of mind. To take this posture is itself the right state of mind.” In the sitting meditation, you are already touching your own truest nature.

By imposing misery on others

Who wishes his own pleasure,

By imposing misery on others,

Who is contaminated by the contact of hate,

He is not released from hate.

Shift your focus

Once you shift your focus from yourself to others and extend your concern to others, this will have the immediate effect of opening up your life and helping you to reach out. The practice of cultivating altruism has a beneficial effect not only from a religious point of view but also from a mundane point of view; not only for long-term spiritual development but even in terms of immediate rewards. ~ His Holiness The 14th Dalai Lama
